Four Fashion Brands Using Forced Uyghur Labor Are Under Investigation
July 02, 2021
Four multinational fashion retailers, Uniqlo France, Inditex, SMCP and Skechers, are facing an investigation from French prosecutors. They are suspected of having concealled and profiting from crimes against humanity in China’s Xinjiang region by sourcing goods produced using forced Uyghur labor. According to The Guardian, this investigation follows a complaint filed in early April this year.
The complaint was based upon a report on the use of forced Uyghur labor in the clothing industry by the Australian NGO ASPI. Campaigners include the anti-corruption group Sherpa, the Uyghur Institute of Europe and a Uyghur who was interned in Xinjiang. Experts and rights groups of the UN estimate that more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities have been detained for years in the concentration camp in Xinjiang, so called “vocational training centers” by the Chinese Communist Party, as low paid forced labor.
