The Chinese Communist Party Has Shut Down the Southwest American Chamber of Commerce
Translated by: MOS Gourmet Team – Chevalier
On August 30th, the Southwest American Chamber of Commerce in Chengdu was banned by the Chinese Communist Party. It is no longer allowed to engage in any business activities in China in the name of the Chamber of Commerce.
Founded in 1996, the Southwest Chamber of Commerce is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that aims to promote trade and investment between the United States and the provinces in Southwest China. It is the most influential foreign chamber of commerce in this region. In July 2020, the CCP closed the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu in retaliation of the shut down of the CCP Consulate General in Houston. This incident represents the escalating confrontation between the United States and China in recent years, and the distrust and hostility between Western countries and the CCP.
On the one hand, the CCP is worried that the economic decoupling between the United States and China will affect its own rule. On the other hand, it has tightened its crackdown on non-governmental organizations and information exchange channels in Europe and the United States, strictly guarding and isolating the country. The closure of the American Chamber of Commerce, which has been in operation for 25 years, is a manifestation of the CCP’s frustration/desolation before its collapse.
